King Vendrick's edict says it explicitly:

You are reading this poster on the street. You are not alone. You look at the people around you and they all have the same blank stare. You don't even remember what you read. You know for sure that you too were looking for Elric for your own purposes. You wanted something from him but you don't know what. You close your eyes and after a while you open them again. You are no longer in the square of Astrabi. You are in a wet and dark place between steep rocks. Then you see him and your breath is taken away, you had heard about the guardian of the stone, but it is one thing to hear about it and another to see this imposing presence in front of you. Wait… Why did the guardian stone appear in front of you? It is said that he seals the way of the dead… The Dead pass… Well, how did you get there?
Later....

You move in the dark and feel the moist atmosphere around you… You can hear your breath growing faster as you feel the danger is approaching.
The infinite silence interrupts eerie screams and OFS. You discover that you are not alone…
Some of them are beside you, in front of you, behind you. Everyone here for a reason. Same for everyone? You’re going to have to find out soon enough. If you don’t, you’ll turn into one of those cursed creatures that roams around to pieces you.
